Piano Lessons for Kids in Plano

I have years of experience working with young children, late elementary students, middle schoolers and beyond. Whether your child has no musical experience, already plays in a school band, or wants to audition for an undergraduate music degree, please get in touch.

Every young student is unique. Some kids love to work through the Faber piano method and do theory worksheets at home, while others are better suited for the Royal Conservatory of Music “Learn To Play” series. I also make an effort to engage with music and exercises that excite a student. We will find level-appropriate music that your child loves (it could be an arrangement of a movie or showtune, for instance), and I will also include material that I know will make them better as a pianist.

All things considered, my goal is to help young pianists receive a strong education in the musical fundamentals, achieve a self-sustaining level of piano playing, and discover a genuine love of music.

Piano Lessons for Adults

My adult students often have specific goals, lots of intellectual curiosity about music, and many questions about the piano. Because of this, we share an excellent professional report and see significant improvement fairly quickly.

Do you want to learn a set of carols before the Christmans season, or have you always wanted to play a certain Adele song or Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata? Or perhaps you took piano lessons as a child, and you want to pick up where you left off. From total beginners to skilled amateur pianists, we can arrange lesson materials around your specific goals and needs.

A Well Rounded Music Education

Learn Piano Technique

It’s important to sit correctly at the piano from day one. From foot placement to hand position, incorrect technique can lead to tension, pain, serious injury (like carpal tunnel), and delayed growth at the piano. For instance, bad technique can prohibit a pianist from playing faster, working with a broad range of dynamics, and ever progressing past an early intermediate level.

Learn How To Read Music

Pianists must learn to read music fluently in both the bass and treble clefs at the same time. This sets them apart from other instrumentalists and singers. I will help you or your child learn note reading on the staff in a logical system, and we won’t go any faster than you are comfortable. Over time, you will learn how to read accidentals (sharps and flats), identify scales and chords without reading each note individually, and even sight read.

Strengthen Your Ear

“Ear training” is the practice of identifying harmonies, intervals (like thirds and octaves), melodies, and being able to play them on the piano without music. We can also develop your ability to improvise as your knowledge of theory and harmony improve over time. This is also a natural gateway into writing songs and other compositions.

Understand Music Theory

Music theory teaching is embedded in good piano pedagogy. You will learn about key signatures, scale degrees, chords, inversions, harmonies, and how to identify musical patterns in the music you play. We can also dig into musical form as you become more advanced. All of this combines to make you a stronger musician, and you will love listening to music, both mainstream and classical, when you can understand what is happening beneath the surface.

Commonly Asked Questions About My Studio

My Piano Studio Location

My piano studio is located near the intersection of 18th Street and Ridgewood Drive in Plano. My students from Richardson often drive up Shiloh Rd, and Meadows Elementary School, Memorial Elementary School, and plenty of shopping and restaraunts are nearby if you’d like to make lessons part of your daily routine.

Are There Practice Requirements For Students?

Students will be expected to practice at least 30 minutes per day, since musical progress is made through regular practice sessions at home. I will teach you drills, concepts and repertoire in your weekly lessons, and I’ll send practice material with you. If you set aside an appropriate amount of time each day to review these lesson materials, you will see amazing growth as a pianist.

Beginner pianists can see real progress with just 30 minutes of practice per day. As you progress to more challenging music, you will need more time in order to work through new challenges and concepts. Advanced pianists tackling concertos, sonatas, and other difficult literature may need to practice far more than that, broken up into manageable 20-30 minute chunks.

We will discuss practice strategies in your lesson, and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Do You Need an Instrument at Home?

You will need an instrument at home in order to allow for daily practice. While a beginner may progress with a digital keyboard, intermediate students and beyond will need to practice on a piano due to the nuances of touch and sound that a digital keyboard simply can’t reproduce. If you need more information regarding purchasing a piano, I can help you get in touch with various local sources for new and used pianos.

Are You Required to Participate in Recitals and Competitions?

I strongly recommend that my students play in our recitals, and as they improve, participate in regional festivals and adjudication settings. The preparation, memorization, and ability to perform in front of someone else can have tremendous benefits. Ultimately, music is made for communicating and sharing with others, and I believe students of all levels will benefit from this process.

What Genres and Styles Can You Learn in Piano Lessons?

As a classically trained pianist, I focus on traditional and well-rounded piano lessons. You will study technique, note reading, sight reading, musical interpretation and more – all skills that lend themselves well to advanced piano playing.

However, the theory, technique and ear training you’ll receive will help you play Broadway, rock, pop, country, and even jazz music. I want you to love music and enjoy playing the piano, so if you have a specific song or genre in mind, please speak with me about it.

Do You Have Any Other Questions About Lessons in My Studio?

I would be happy to speak with you about piano lessons in my studio. Students travel from Kings Ridge, Willow Bend, Lakeside on Preston, and other area neighborhoods. If there’s anything I can help you with, please send me a note and we’ll set up a time to speak on the phone or hold a trial lesson.
